Scattery Island Heritage Group entered The Community Archives and Heritage Group (CAHG) Awards for 2022 under the category of “Gathering and Preserving Heritage”. We were shortlisted and finally selected as the winner of this award for 2022. There was a ceremony held in July as part of the Community Archives and Heritage Conference 2022, at NUIG.
Scattery Island Heritage Group Chair, Eve Brennan, did a presentation related to the group’s digital archive and its activities to delegates who attended the conference and awards ceremony. We highlighted the work the group has undertaken through this medium to gather, preserve and share the heritage of Scattery Island in the 19th and 20th centuries in particular.
The judges were particularly impressed with the efforts made to preserve this important part of the Island’s heritage, the work undertaken to preserve and capture oral histories, working with Irish Life and Lore in this area, and activities group members have undertaken to replicate artefacts from Scattery Island during this period.

This would not have been possible without the support of the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN), especially Lorna Elms and Hassan Dabbagh who are continuously available to help and advise Scattery Island Heritage Group in relation to the efficient running and technical difficulties related to our digital archive.
It would not have been possible to win this award without the involvement of you, the community, who peruse and contribute to our digital archive and provide us with photographs, stories and ideas that we can share and preserve here for the future.
Míle Buíochas to all involved, let’s keep building on Our Island Story to honour and preserve Our Scattery Island families into the future.
