Heritage Week 2022

Heritage Week 2022 took place from 13-21 August, with the theme of biodiversity and sustainability. People were encouraged, across all age groups and backgrounds, to learn more about their built, cultural and natural heritage and ensure its preservation and protection in the years ahead.

Scattery Island Heritage Group in co-operation with the OPW, embraced this theme for Heritage week 2022. We brought our digital archive, our Scattery Island artefacts from personal collections loaned to us by group members and by the wider community along with our heritage postcards to Scattery Island for 3 days during Heritage week.

Over the period of the week, we met with visitors to the Island and engaged with them about our archive, encouraged people to peruse it and to contribute any stories, photographs or indeed ideas using the contribute tab on the site itself.

We gave members of the public our free Heritage postcards. They highlight the tradition of rowing and the use of canoes on Scattery Island in the past, and its continuation into the present day. The postcards also contain the address for our digital archive so we hope to have spread the word about it to a wider audience, by engaging with visitors to Scattery Island for Heritage week 2022.

We are very appreciative of the support we received from the OPW allowing our group to host this event for Heritage week 2022 over the course of the week, thereby sharing and preserving the Island’s cultural heritage with visitors from near and far.

We hope you enjoy these photographs from our time on Scattery Island for Heritage Week 2022. We would like to thank the young man in one of the photographs, and his mother for giving us permission to feature this, as we shared Scattery Island’s heritage with him during our time on the Island.
