In the time of Senan, it is said women were banned for coming on to the island and there were no exceptions. However, there may have been one who broke or at least bent the rule and that was St Cannera of Bantry who came to the island when she was very ill and about to die…
Historian and author Dr. Rosemary Power tells the story of Canara and her meeting with Senan.
The photo of St Canara is from a stain glass window in St. Senan’s Church, Monmore which is on the Doonbeg road about three miles from Kilrush. The church windows feature local saints and those such as Canara who are connected to the area. Worth a visit.
